Equipment

The Essential (and not so essential) items for your knee replacement

Walking Aids

Two Wheel Walker: Essential for the first few weeks after surgery

*DO NOT USE a 4 wheel walker - it does not provide enough support for your new knee

Crutches: Needed for stairs and to progress your walking

Cane: Final progression once you're knee strength and flexibility are close to normal

Other Helpful Tools

Leg Lifter: This useful strap is used to loop around your foot to help lift your operated leg into and out of bed

Ice Machine: A great pain relief option that will allow you to do all your rehab exercises

Ice Packs: A more economical option, just ensure that you have several so you can rotate them in the freezer and on your knee

Elevation Pillow: This is the BEST way to regain your knee straightening, you need to rest with your ankle higher than your knee, and your knee higher than your hip.

Raised Toilet Seat: Best for taller individuals who can not stand up from their toilet using only the strength in their non-operated leg.

Toilet Safety Frame: Handles that go around your toilet, so you can use your arms to help lift you up from the toilet

Bath or Shower Bench: Provides a seat to help to prevent a fall while showering. There are a variety of sizes and options to have a back rest.

Stationary Bike: Regain the bend in your knee quickly and easily while pedaling.

Recumbent Bike: Best option if you are looking for extra support in sitting while using the pedals

Tools to Regain Flexibility

Foot Pedals: If you don't have access to a stationary or recumbent bike, this is a good alternate to help you get your knee moving.

Silicone Cups: Useful to help move swelling and loosen up the surface layers of skin around your knee.

Foot Glider: This nifty little device helps making knee bend a much smoother exercise. Your heel sits in the cup, and it glides back and forth with minimal effort.

Foot Glider (smaller version): Similar to the other foot glider, but smaller and more compact to help you easily regain your knee bend.

Pilates Ball (9inch): Use this small ball to support your knee while exercising. It is a great tool for both strengthening and stretching.
