DOES YOUR WALKER FIT YOU?

fit your walker properly before your knee replacement

HAVING A WALKER THAT FITS YOU PROPERLY WILL MAKE IT EASIER AND SAFER TO GET MOVING ON YOUR OWN AFTER YOUR KNEE REPLACEMENT

The importance of the right fitting walker is often overlooked when people are collecting their equipment to use after their knee replacement. Walkers come in so many varieties and sizes, knowing that you've picked the right one BEFORE surgery will ensure that you will be able to get walking as soon as possible after you have your new knee.

So, how do you know if you've got the right fit?

Stand tall and in line with the back posts of the walker, now let your arms rest at your sides... the handles of the walker should be in line with your wrist. Most walkers are height adjustable, but don't assume that the one you select will fit you unless you check. What happens if the walker is too short...

If the walker is too short, you will have a hard time taking a full step. If you are already leaning forward to reach the walker in standing when you try to move it forward to take a step, you won't be able to move it very much and it will prevent you from getting an equal sized step from both your legs.
